The ATSI Workplace Services Unit assists Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders in NSW to understand their rights and responsibilities as employees, managers and employers. In particular, the Unit advises Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders on the laws relating to:
The Unit also assists Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders in NSW to obtain information on all DIR services, and employment issues such as occupational health and safety, workers compensation and superannuation matters. The goal of the ATSI Workplace Services Unit is to improve the employment conditions experienced by Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders in NSW. To achieve this, the Unit works with organisations and government agencies involved in assisting Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders in NSW. The ATSI Workplace Services Unit receives assistance from a number of organisations. An Advisory Committee, comprising representatives from major Aboriginal organisations and government agencies, guides the Unit's work. Services provided by the ATSI Workplace Services UnitATSI Employment Advisory ServiceThe ATSI Employment Advisory Service is a specialist telephone enquiry service. Callers receive information on NSW employment laws, advice on employment issues and information on available services. All calls to the ATSI Employment Advisory Service are treated confidentially. Callers pay only for the cost of a local telephone call. ATSI Workplace Services Employment KitThe ATSI Workplace Services Employment Kit gives detailed information for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations (managers and management committees) on establishing lawful, productive, equitable and innovative working relationships. The Kit is a loose-leaf service, updated periodically by the ATSI Workplace Services Unit. ATSI Workplace Services Employment WorkshopsThe ATSI Workplace Services Unit conducts workshops for Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders in NSW. The workshops cover employment issues, NSW employment laws, minimum employment standards, good employment practices and the DIR's services. The workshops are conducted on request, through community organisations and government agencies in regional centres throughout NSW.
