Traineeships

The employer of a trainee must provide the trainee with:

• every opportunity to learn the skills and acquire the knowledge of the trade
• access to structured on and/or off-the-job training
• time off work to attend training when necessary
• time at work to undertake structured training
• a safe working environment
• a work environment free from any form of harassment
• other benefits specified in the traineeship agreement.

The employer is responsible for ensuring the trainee has access to the full range of work required to develop the skills and industry knowledge they need on the job.

Pay rates and Awards

Following is a list of NSW State Awards that have provision for training wages. Please note that some of the awards mentioned below have provisions for 2 year adult traineeship wages. This is a specific provision and does not mean 2 x 1 year traineeships running concurrently.

A traineeship shall not commence until the relevant traineeship agreement, made in accordance with a traineeship scheme, has been signed by the employer and the trainee and lodged for registration with DET.
