Apprenticeships

The employer of an apprentice must provide the apprentice with:

  • every opportunity to learn the skills and acquire the knowledge of the trade
  • access to structured on and/or off-the-job training
  • time off work to attend training when necessary
  • time at work to undertake structured training
  • a safe working environment
  • a work environment free from any form of harassment
  • other benefits specified in the agreement or industrial arrangement (eg. a tool allowance).

The employer is responsible for ensuring that an apprentice has access to the full range of work required to develop the skills and industry knowledge they need on the job.

There is a probationary period of employment for up to 3 months when an apprenticeship begins with a new employer.

The relevant apprenticeship agreement, made in accordance with an apprenticeship scheme, must be signed by the employer and the apprentice and lodged with Department of Education and Training (DET) within 28 days.

Further details are outlined on the Department of Education and Training (DET) website.
