The Information and Research Centre maintains a specialist library of information relating to industrial relations, human resources, management, workplace reform and related topics.

Advancing women's employment equity

The role of the Women's Equity Bureau (WEB) is to implement Government policy on women in the workplace. This includes pay equity, employment discrimination and work and family issues. The WEB undertakes research, provides policy advice and conducts information campaigns.

Information regarding conditions of employment under NSW awards and industrial legislation can be obtained from the Office of Industrial Relations Online or telephone 131 628.

Advice and Training on NSW Employment Issues

NSW businesses can gain assistance to implement new and better ways of working that involve cooperative negotiations such as enterprise bargaining as well as flexible work practices.

Information and advice can be provided on enterprise agreements, recruitment, managing staff, workplace policies and procedures, managing performance, ending the employment relationship and other employment issues.

ATSI Unit

The Unit helps Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders in NSW to understand their rights and responsibilities as employees, managers and employers. It also advises Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders on industrial laws and employment issues.

Award Information Services

Office of Industrial Relations provides information on all NSW awards and industrial relations legislation.

Employers are required by law to exhibit in the workplace those NSW awards that set the pay and working conditions of their employees. Awards maybe purchased individually or as part of the OIR's subscription service.

The OIR's Award Subscription Service advises employers on all changes, variations and replacement awards. Updated sections of awards are mailed to subscribers immediately after gazettal.

Increasing compliance through education

OIR inspectors provide information and educational services to employers to help them understand their obligations to employees. Inspectors also resolve industrial complaints and conduct targeted industry campaigns. Educating employers and prosecuting breaches of NSW awards and industrial legislation protects the rights of employees and ensures a fairer industry environment.

Promoting the industrial relations agenda

The Policy Branch develops, implements and promotes the NSW Government's industrial relations agenda. Its primary role is to advise the Minister for Industrial Relations and the OIR on current and emerging industrial relations issues.

GREAT and TAB

Government and Related Employees Appeal Tribunal hears and determines appeals against decisions relating to:

  • disciplinary appeals
  • promotions appeals
  • police hurt on duty appeals

Transport Appeals Board hear and determine appeals by employees against certain decisions of public sector transport Authorities to:

  • dismiss or
  • otherwise discipline them.
