Introducing the Department of Commerce

The NSW Department of Commerce (Commerce) is the government agency whose role is to make doing business in NSW simple, accessible and fair for employees, consumers and industry while providing best value for government.

 

Formed after the 2003 March State election, Commerce comprises five offices that incorporate the functions of the former departments of Industrial Relations, Fair Trading, Public Works and Services and the Office of Information Technology.

 

Office of Industrial Relations

The Office of Industrial Relations (OIR) is responsible for monitoring wages, employment rights, obligations and conditions in NSW.

OIR provides help and information to both employees and employers.

 

OIR Services

  • information for employees and employers on NSW employment laws through a free telephone service, the OIR website and a range of publications
  • advice and assistance to help small businesses implement innovative, productive and equitable workplace practices
  • workshops to help small business employers understand awards and employment law as well as recruitment and termination issues
  • inspection services which provide information and educational services to employers to help them understand their obligations to employees; and
  • a dedicated unit to help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in NSW understand their rights and responsibilities as employees, employers and managers.
