Common occupations for employees working in retail shops include shop assistants, window dressers, sales consultants and door to door sales staff.

Most employees in the retail industry are covered by the Shop Employees (State) Award.

Exceptions

No award covers work performed by managers, tele-marketers and tele-sales for the sale of goods, and travel consultants.  Tele-marketing and tele-sales for the sale of a service may be covered by the Clerical and Administrative Employees State Award as telephone canvassers.

A different award may apply to employees who:

• a chemist or pharmacy
• a hairdressing salon
• a butcher shop
• a nursery
• a petrol station
• a motor vehicle dealership
• a motor bike shop
• a photographic studio or photo processing lab

2. Work as:

• a clerk in a shop
• a commercial traveller (selling at a whole sale price) in the retail industry
