Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Unit

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Unit assists Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders in NSW to understand their rights and responsibilities as employees, managers and employers. It also advises Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders on industrial laws and employment issues.

In particular, the Unit advises Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders on the laws relating to:

  • pay rates
  • employment conditions, leave entitlements and work practices
  • issues covering recruitment and termination of employment and
  • payslips and employment records.

The Unit also assists Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders in NSW to obtain information on all NSW IR services, and employment issues such as occupational health and safety, workers compensation and superannuation matters.

The goal of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Unit is to improve the employment conditions experienced by Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders in NSW. To achieve this, the Unit works with organisations and government agencies involved in assisting Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders in NSW.
