What NSW Industrial Relations does

NSW Industrial Relations (NSW IR) strives to make NSW workplaces fairer, more innovative, flexible, and responsive to the needs of employers and workers. Apart from the direct services offered to individuals and businesses, the legislation we administer sets the rules for fairness in the workplace.

NSW Industrial Relations is part of the NSW Department of Services, Technology and Administration (DSTA) [previously known as the Department of Commerce].

The Minister for Industrial Relations, Hon. John Hatzistergos, BEc LLM MLC welcomes you to NSW IR website.

NSW Industrial Relations’ primary responsibilities are to monitor wages, employment rights, obligations and employment conditions in NSW. NSW IR provides advice and information to both workers and employers. Our aim is to achieve fairness and equity for all at work.

NSW Industrial Relations delivers:

  • Information for employees and employers on NSW employment laws through a free telephone service, the NSW IR website and a range of publications.
  • Advice and assistance to help small businesses implement innovative, productive and equitable workplace practices.
  • Workshops to help small business employers understand awards and employment law as well as recruitment and termination issues.
  • Inspection services which provide information and educational services to employers to help them understand their obligations to employees.
  • A dedicated unit to help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in NSW understand their rights and responsibilities as employees, employers and managers.

If you would like further information or assistance on the services we provide or any NSW industrial relations rights and responsibilities you can contact NSW Industrial Relations on 131 628 or visit your nearest office.

We hope you find our website easy to use, with relevant and useful information and advice for employers and workers.
